New York Mets Woeful 0-3 Start, Worst Start since 2014
And to think the New York Mets have 159 more games to go this season.
The Mets are off to a miserable start to the 2024 season. They sit at 0-3 after getting swept away by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. It wasn’t just the fact that the Brewers swept New York that should bother Mets fans, it’s the fact that Milwaukee out-classed them in every way imaginable.
No Offense:
The Mets managed only eight runs over the three games against Milwaukee, which is tied for the fewest runs scored in Major League Baseball through the weekend. The Chicago White Sox have been equally inept, scoring only eight runs themselves. Were it not for Brett Baty’s three-run homer in the eighth on Saturday, followed by Pete Alonso’s solo blast in the ninth inning of the same game, the Mets would have scored only four runs this weekend.
With a .202 team batting average, the New York Mets are ranked 25th in baseball in total offense.
Starting Pitching Is Bad:
Most baseball people knew the Mets were going to have a hard time with a starting rotation that doesn’t feature a credible ace. Jose Quintana struggled with his control, pitching only 4.2 innings on Opening Day. That was followed up a very poor outing by Luis Severino, who surrounded six runs on 12 hits over five innings. Finally, Tylor MeGill also struggled with his command on Sunday. He went only four innings after allowing a run on three hits and three walks.
Losing Composure:
The Mets also lost some composure this weekend after Milwaukee’s Rhys Hoskins slid hard into second base on Opening Day. The incident led to heated words exchanged between Hoskins and Mets second baseman Jeff McNeill. On Saturday, the Mets retaliated only after Hoskins crushed the Mets with a homer and four RBI. Come the seventh inning, the Mets Yohan Ramirez threw one over Hoskins head. Ramirez was suspended three games, and Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was suspended for one game on Sunday.
The wild pitch by Ramirez led Mets analyst Ron Darling to conclude that the Mets waited too long to retaliate against Hoskins.
What made the situation even more bizarre? On Sunday Mets bench coach John Gibbons admitted that he didn’t know he would be managing Sunday’s game instead of Mendoza until 12 noon, about 90 minutes before first pitch.
Let’s just say things are not cool in Met-land right about now.
Gotta Believe?
The last two times the Mets started a season at 0-3, it was followed up the next year by a huge postseason run. This is not to predict the future. But, in 2005 when the Mets started 0-3, they had rising stars in David Wright and Jose Reyes, and newly acquired vets in Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran. They finished 2005 at 83-79. It was the start of something. The following year, the Mets had the best record in the NL and went to Game 7 of the NLCS against St. Louis.
In 2014, the Mets started 0-3, finished 79-83, but the seeds of what was to come with their pitching staff was there. They had young starters in Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard making waves already. The next year in 2015, the Mets went to the World Series.
