Russian Invasion Of Ukraine Hits Global Wheat Supply

ISTANBUL, TURKEY – MARCH 23: Freshly baked breads are seen at a bakery on March 23, 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2021 Turkey’s wheat imports from Ukraine and Russia reached record levels. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is causing shortages of wheat worldwide and bread prices are rising in many countries. Russia is the world’s number-one wheat exporter and largest producer, after China and India, but international sanctions are preventing sales and disrupting the supply chain. Ukraine is among the top five wheat exporters worldwide but war with Russia is preventing the wheat from leaving the country via its Black Sea ports.

A Jersey Shore bakery will be closing its doors this summer after 74 years in business. Kohler’s Bakery took to social media Tuesday to announce its decision to close.

"This past year has brought some challenging decisions with my business space and it’s future," owner Colleen Quinn-Maxwell wrote. "Unfortunately, a lease agreement was unable to be met to continue to keep KOHLER’S BAKERY at 27th and Dune Drive after this September."

Quinn-Maxwell continued: "While I’m sure this is a shock to many, it comes with the opportunity to make the most of your memories with us for one last summer on the corner of Dune Drive."

Kohler’s has been located at 2709 Dune Drive in Avalon since 1949. They are known for their various baked goods such as cakes, cookies, bread, donuts, and specialty pastries.

Quinn-Maxwell became the owner of Kohler’s Bakery in 2006. She had worked for the eatery for years before becoming the owner.

"31 years ago I stood out on the porch of KOHLER’S BAKERY to sell The Philadelphia Inquirer in the summer of 1992," she reminisced of her beginnings with the bakery. "I loved greeting customers and having the sweet smells of the baked goods drift out the door with each person who walked in. I never knew back then all that I would love about this bakery being a part of it as an employee and then as an owner."

However, Kohler’s is still geared up for one last summer down at the Jersey Shore.

"We look forward to seeing you this summer for one more summer season and having you enjoy all of your Kohler’s Bakery favorites," Quinn-Maxwell wrote.
