Mets Get Back on Track, Sweep Bucs in DH
Well that is what the doctor ordered. After suffering a third straight loss to a last place team on Tuesday night, and losing Max Scherzer to the injury list on top of that, the Mets pounded the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 and 10-0 in a double-header sweep in the Steel City.
The offensive explosion comes after the Mets struggled to score four runs during a three-game losing streak leading into Wednesday’s double-header in Pittsburgh.
Eduardo Escobar had the biggest day of any Mets player offensively, collecting six hits and a homerun between the two games combined. Tyler Naquin’s three-run bomb in the fourth inning of Game 1 proved to be the difference in the opener, as it gave the Mets a 4-0 lead.
Francisco Lindor, Jeff McNeil and Mark Canha would join the action in the nightcap with multi-hit games. Lindor had a pair of doubles and three-RBI as he helped the Mets build an early 5-0 lead. Jeff McNeill also had a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning to push the Mets lead to 7-0.
On hill, Chris Bassitt and Jacob deGrom were both electric. Bassitt held the Pirates to just a run on five hits over seven innings with 10 strikeouts. He improved to 13-7 and lowered his ERA to 3.24.
deGrom was his usual masterful-self. The Mets ace blanked the Bucs over seven innings of three-hit ball with eight strikeouts. His ERA ticked down to 1.66.
As a result of the Mets double-header sweep, they jump back to a half game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
Keith REALLY enjoyed hearing that Jacob deGrom's ERA for the season is 1.66 🤣 pic.twitter.com/MNrtDQcDN1
