Jersey City will be the center of the soccer world -- at least for a couple hours today anyway as soccer aficionados and local politicians await word from FIFA on whether the Tri-State area will be named a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The event will take place today from Liberty State Park from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Both New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) and New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) are expected to speak.  Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, as well as Red Bulls' Aaron Long and NYC FC's Gideion Zelalem are expected to speak as well.

The United States last hosted a World Cup back in 1994 when it took place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Brazil wound up beating Italy 3-2 on penalty kicks. The World Cup which takes place every four years since 1930, will be held this year in Qatar.

The 2026 games are expected to take place somewhere in North America with Canada and Mexico also vying for the games. Canada has never hosted the World Cup. Mexico has hosted twice in 1986 and 1970.
