N.J. Sales Tax Holiday: School Supplies Will Be Tax-Free For 10 Days
New Jersey parents and teachers will be seeing a little bit of relief at checkout when they shop for school supplies for the new school year. Starting Saturday (Aug. 27) in N.J., school supplies — from pencils to laptops — will be tax-free for 10 days ending on Sept. 5. The tax holiday is included in the $50.6 billion state budget signed by Gov. Phil Murphy on July 1.
The tax holiday will waive New Jersey’s 6.625% sales tax on a range of supplies, including pens, notebooks, art supplies, textbooks, computers, and sports equipment. Clothing and footwear are already tax-free in New Jersey.
“Back-to-school shopping can be stressful on its own, but it can be even more stressful for those parents, students, and teachers who are struggling to make ends meet,” Murphy said, per NJ.com. “As inflation remains a central worry, this sales tax holiday is one of the ways in which we are prioritizing affordability for our families.”
New Jersey Treasurer Elizabeth Muoio said the tax holiday “will help hardworking parents and teachers across our state stretch their dollars a little further and fill the annual back-to-school shopping ritual with excitement rather than worry.”
“For many families and educators, there are understandable worries about preparing their children for the school year or stocking their classrooms with supplies amidst the increasing cost of goods nationwide,” Muoio said in a statement, per the outlet.
