Somerset Patriots Take Playoff Race to Final Day
It all comes down to this! The Somerset Patriots took care of business on Saturday, defeating the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3-1 at TD Bank Ballpark, setting up and win-and-in scenario on Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale.
The Portland SeaDogs, who lost their first three games of a series to Binghamton earlier this week, won on Saturday 1-0 to remain a half game out of first place in the East Division of the Double-A Eastern League.
It’s ironic that on a weekend where the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are tussling in the Bronx, it is their Double-A affiliates who are battling for the final playoff spot in the Double-A baseball league season. What a finish!
HOW IT HAPPENED
Elijah Dunham put the Patriots out in front Saturday with a two-run blast to right in the second inning. It was his third homer of the series, and 14th of the season for Somerset. In the four games Dunham has played, the Patriots have gone 4-0, and Dunham has gone 5-for-14 with nine RBI, five runs scored, and three homers.
Meanwhile on the hill Cam Schlitter dazzled, holding the Fisher Cats to a run on four hits over five innings of work. He walked two and struck out nine batters. Schlittler ends the night with the most strikeouts of any Yankees minor league pitcher (154), while ranking second in the system with a 3.36 ERA according to the Somerset Patriots.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The Patriots must win their game tomorrow to have the most direct route to the playoffs regardless of what Portland does.
If Somerset should lose to New Hampshire, Somerset will need help from the Mets Double-A affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to defeat Portland in their finale.
Should Somerset lose and Portland wins, Somerset would be out of the playoffs.
First pitch tomorrow is at 1:05 p.m. Trystan Vrieling (12-7, 4.76 ERA) is expected to get the ball for Somerset.
