The Daniel Jones-Saquon Barkley Era Could Be Ending for Big Blue
If recent events are any indication, then the New York Giants could be in store for some radical changes in the not-to-distant future.
Reports indicate that the Giants did not franchise tag running back Saquon Barkley for a second straight year, allowing the 2018 first-round pick to test free agency for the first time. Meanwhile, rumors surfaced on Monday that the Giants are “absolutely done” with quarterback Daniel Jones.
Saquon Barkley
First on Barkley. He has professed a desire to play out his career in New York but is still waiting on a long-term deal. He was not happy with the long-term contract offered last off-season that would have paid him $23 million in guarantees. And now, after playing a year on a $11 million franchise tag, can test the waters.
Rumors have abounded that the Houston Texans could be a suitor for Barkley should he break free of New York.
It would make sense for Barkley to leave. Not only would he probably make equal to, or more money in Houston (no state income tax in Texas certainly helps), but he would be on a team with a win-now window. The Giants window is up in the air at this point in time, and it doesn’t help the G-Men are looking up at Dallas and Philly in the standings.
Daniel Jones
Meanwhile, Rich Eisen floated a rumor on his radio show that the Giants are done with Daniel Jones, and that they have buyer’s remorse for extending Jones to a contract. New York inked Jones to a four-year $160 million extension last season to be their franchise quarterback.
If the Giants are indeed done with Jones that opens the door to drafting a quarterback — potentially — with the sixth overall pick. There was even speculation by Giants fans on X that Michigan’s JJ McCarthy could be a target. If that happens, it would create a slew of issues for the Giants. Namely playing Jones in 2024 — since cutting him would be a $69 million cap hit, while not getting him any help on the offensive line or at wide receiver via the draft.
Talk about awkward.
Buckle up folks, it’s gonna get wild this spring.
