Rutgers offensive woes continue vs. Nebraska
The rollercoaster season that has been the 2023-24 basketball campaign for Rutgers continued on Sunday with a disappointing 67-56 loss on the road to Nebraska on Sunday night. The loss follows a spirited effort, and dominant win over Michigan last Thursday at Jersey Mike’s Arena.
“When you go on the road and don’t make free throws, that can never help us. I really thought the effort was there though,” Head Coach Steve Pikiell said of his basketball team.
“Nebraska is a good basketball team and they made timely shots, especially in the first half. Some of their guys who don’t normally make threes stepped up for them. We have a tough one upcoming against Wisconsin and hopefully, Mawot (Mag) will be back, and that would give us a big rebounder back. We played hard but it wasn’t enough on the road against a really good basketball team.”
Rutgers missed its first eight shots, and found itself in an early 8-0 hole, and could never really get their offense going the rest of the night. The Scarlet Knights shot a paltry 4-of-25 from down town, and only 37 percent from the field.
Only two players managed in double-figures, Jeremiah Williams (14 points) and Gavin Griffiths (10 points).
Still the Scarlet Knights held their own defensively. Nebraska struggled in their own right to knock down three’s, hitting only nine of 27 shots, and connected on only 40 percent of their shots overall. The difference was at the free throw line, to which Nebraska hit 14 of them, and on the glass. Nebraska had 30 defensive rebounds on the night.
Rutgers’ road trip continues Thursday at Wisconsin, before wrapping up the regular season against Ohio State on Sunday, March 10.
