Tammy Murphy, the State of New Jersey's First Lady, and wife to Governor Phil Murphy will run for a state senate seat in 2024. And it won't just be any kind of seat, it will be the seat currently occupied by fellow Democrat Bob Menendez.
Menendez is in hot water; the subject of a federal bribery scandal in which both he and his wife Nadine are accused of accepting cash, gold bars and vehicles in exchange for influence with the Egyptian government. Members of both parties have called on Menendez to resign.
The embattled senator has pled not guilty and refuses to step aside.
According to News 12, it is not clear if Menendez will run for re-election.
As it stands, both Ms. Murphy and Andy Kim are to run for the seat in the Democrat primary.
The 58-year old Murphy has been a champion of maternal and infant health, and the environment. She has been a consistent prescence next to her husband during his six years in office as Governor.
"Murphy is the honorary chair of the New Jersey Council on the Green Economy and launched Nurture NJ, an initiative aimed at boosting infant and maternal health and lowering maternal mortality, with a goal of cutting maternal mortality by 50 percent by 2026."
