Chris Evans Doesn’t Need Hollywood Anymore
Chris Evans has been steadily stepping back from Hollywood. In a new cover profile for GQ‘s October issue on Tuesday (September 19), the actor opened up about how he prefers a quieter life now that he’s 42. Not long after Evans finished his contractually obligated Captain America performances, he left Los Angeles. Evans told the publication that he wanted to get far away from the city he associates with “Pavlovian anxiety,” so he returned home to his native Massachusetts. It “takes me back to a place when life was not just simpler—that’s too reductive—but to a time where I was more pure, I guess; where my ego and my insecurities weren’t such a dominant force that I had to push against.”

After working in Hollywood for more than 20 years, he recalls acting in a lot of “bad movies” and got cast as “a lot of a–holes” until he was cast as Captain America in 2011. At first, Evans said he was apprehensive about taking on the role, saying he wasn’t sure if he was “moving closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away—that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.” He ultimately starred in 11 movies over the course of 9 years.

Elsewhere in the interview, Evans was asked if he would ever go back to Marvel. He said he would “never say never” to that, “just because it was such a wonderful experience.” Though Evans said he loves to act, it isn’t something he couldn’t live without. He tells GQ he prefers spending his free time having existential thoughts, like “why black holes exist.” Evans enjoys bringing things into perspective, which gives him a “sense of deep peace.” Reflecting back on his early life lessons, Evans says when he goes “small,” he suffers. “When I look at my own life and it’s under a microscope, or when I consider my own experience, it leads to cyclical unhappiness.”
Following the reported tens of millions of dollars he received for playing the role of Captain America, Evans said he is totally free to stop acting if he wanted to. Because of his work with Marvel, Evans feels relaxed that he doesn’t “have to do that as much anymore, and I can just be present.” Last year, Evans filmed three projects: Apple’s action comedy Ghosted, Netflix’s Pain Hustlers movie, and Amazon’s Christmas movie Red One. He hasn’t been on a movie set this year, and says it’s “lovely.”
