Somerset Patriots Hit a Home Run for Veterans on Memorial Day Weekend
What a way to commemorate the Memorial Day weekend.
The Somerset Patriots, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, raised more than $12,600 for local veterans organizations after a fantastic auction during last weekend’s stirring Veterans of America Day ceremony.
“The Patriots wore commemorative jerseys that were auctioned off online and signed by the player or coach who wore it that day. The auction raised over $11,500, the most of any prior fundraising auction hosted by the team. The top jersey was Yankees No. 1 prospect Jasson Dominguez, which sold for just over $3,600,” according to a press released issued by the team.
The Patriots also raised $1,068 in a 50/50 raffle.

The Patriots have honored the country’s military men and women, both fallen and living, for the past 20 years. Hundreds of veterans and their families were welcomed to the ballpark last Sunday, May 21 prior to the Patriots ballgame against the Reading Fightin Phils.
The Guest of Honor was 98-year old World War II veteran Matthew Yacovino, who was a US Navy crewman, who flew over the Mediterranean and Northern Atlantic on the lookout for German Submarines.
“We felt these military-themed jerseys were going to be a big hit and had the chance to make a large amount of money in support of the men and women that have served our country,” said Patriots President/General Manager Patrick McVerry was quoted in the press release.
