Somerset Patriots to Honor 98-Year Old World War II Veteran Matthew Yaconvino
Matthew Yacovino says it was just a job, and that there are no real heroes who fight in wars, except for those who paid the ultimate price.
Yacovino is 98-year old, and if you meet him, you would think he’s 20-years younger; he bursts full of energy and wit as he walked into the Fox Sports New Jersey studios to talk about his war memories. Yacovino is being honored among other veterans at the 20th Annual Veterans of America Day at TD Bank Ball Park on Sunday May 21, hosted by the Somerset Patriots.
Yacovino is the guest of honor.
Fox Sports New Jersey News and Sports Director Michael Cohen sat down with Yacovino to talk to him about his life in a stirring interview that will air on Saturday morning at 8:30 on Fox Sports New Jersey 93.5 FM, 1450 AM and streaming on this website.

Yacovino who hails from Asbury Park and North Brunswick, enlisted into the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and was assigned to serve during World War II in the Naval Air Service. He was shipped to North Africa to serve as a combat air crewman in Patrol Bombing Squadron VP63. His mission was to help a crew of 10 search for German subs in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic.
