In a few hours the phrase "like father, like son" will take a new meaning, especially in the realms of basketball.
Jersey City native Dan Hurley leads his UConn Huskies into battle tonight against a very well coached San Diego State team in the NCAA Men's National Championship game.
Hurley is looking to capture his first NCAA National title as a head coach, while capturing the program's fifth title since 1999.
Should UConn win tonight, Hurley will bring a national title to a family that is very much accustomed to success.
His father, Bob Hurley Sr. won four national titles and 26 state titles as head coach at St. Anthony in Jersey City, becoming one of the most prolific coaches and talent evaluators in the state of New Jersey and around the country.
Like a lot of his father's St. Anthony's teams, Dan Hurley's UConn has turned the NCAA Tournament into the program's personal showcase. They have blown out every single opponent they have faced in the tournament by double-digits.
Most recently they took down a very good Miami Hurricanes team 72-59 in the Final Four in a game that was never close.
The Huskies have a great combo of size and strength. Their mid-court game is very good, and they can hit front down town as well. Adama Sanogo and Jordan Hawkins have led the team in scoring all year, while guard Andre Jackson Jr. has had a huge impact in spreading the ball.
San Diego State is no slouch. Head Coach Brian Dutcher has done a masterful job with his club this year. The Aztecs are fighters, and have won back-to-back one-point games in the Elite Eight and Final Four, respectively. They also knocked out a top-ranked Alabama team that many thought would win this tournament.
If there is one team that could give UConn a run for its money on Monday night, it is the Aztecs.
