For years upon years upon years fans pouring of Shea Stadium, and later, Citi Field grew used to seeing the the smoldering dump that was the chop shops across the street. For years many wondered when the City of New York would do something to spruce that area up and turn that part of Queens into something big and special. Well now it appears something “special” might indeed happen.

The City of New York has reached an agreement to build a soccer stadium in Queens across from Citi Field that will be the exclusive home for New York City FC, the Major League Soccer team that captured the MLS Cup last fall.

NYCFC will pay $780 million to build a 25,000 seat stadium. According to the New York Post, te plan also includes a housing complex that will be built by Related Companies and Sterling Equities, which of course as Mets fans know, is the Wilpon’s.

The stadium could be ready by 2027.

Already it’s drawing excitement.
