Mets Eye Former Nationals Closer Kyle Finnegan To Beef Up Bullpen Following NLCS Run
The Mets are targeting free agent Kyle Finnegan. The former Nationals closer kept his ERA below 5.00 during the back half of 2024, drawing New York’s interest. Fresh off a deep run in the National League Championship Series, the Mets want to beef up their bullpen by bringing in Finnegan to pair with Edwin Diaz and A.J. Minter. This possible pickup comes on the heels of landing Juan Soto.
“I am excited about the opportunity to join a competitive team like the Mets,” said Finnegan to MLB.com.
Since their World Series win in 2019, the Nationals have hit rough times. They’ve only mustered 71 wins over two seasons. Their bullpen fell apart late in 2024, and now Finnegan’s departure leaves them in a tough spot. Still, Washington’s outlook remains bright. Young talents CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr. keep turning heads. Meanwhile, top prospects James Wood and Dylan Crews are poised to break through next year.
“We need to stabilize the bullpen for the 2025 season,” said Mike Rizzo to ESPN.
This pursuit of Finnegan follows the Mets’ trend of big winter pickups, similar to their Max Scherzer signing in 2021. They’re gearing up to challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers for National League East dominance.
Where Finnegan ends up will impact both teams’ pitching futures. While Washington hunts for their next closer during rebuilding, the Mets look to build on their strong 2024 showing.
