Giants Win (maybe) By Losing
Ok Giants fans, we know how you feel. This season has been a total train wreck. Big Blue is 2-13 following a no-show 34-7 loss to Atlanta on Sunday. Fans are swarming social media, and even flying planes over MetLife Stadium calling for the ouster of Head Coach Brian Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen.
But if there is one silver lining in this miserable season it is this: right now the Giants own the top pick in the NFL draft.
That is because the Raiders (3-12) beat the Jaguars (3-12) on Sunday. The Panthers (4-11) also won in OT over Arizona. So the Giants are all alone atop the draft.
Congratulations!
Granted there are still two games left in this season, and anything can happen, but for those who are on the infamous “tank” bandwagon, this is a day to crack a smile (potentially) at what could be coming in the future.
It is expected that the Giants will draft a quarterback (they really have no choice) with their first pick in April’s draft, and many expect either Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Miami’s Cam Ward would be that pick.
The Giants, if they finish with the first pick, will have all the time in the world to decide which signal caller fits them the best.
Sanders of course comes with a lot of hype, mainly because he is the son of NFL Hall of Famer, and current Colorado Head Coach Deion Sanders. The young man is used to the spotlight, some might argue he craves it.
Whether he a good fit for the typically buttoned-down Giants is going to be a fascinating question. While Sanders has immense talent, there will be pressure. Is that a good fit to throw the young man into the fire that is New York?
On social media, Sanders has been busy following the Raiders. Perhaps Vegas is a better fit. Stay tuned.
As for Cam Ward, he might be the safer bet of the two, at least from the media standpoint. While Miami (FL) was his third school, Ward was consistent across the board in his career, completing 65 percent of his passes for 17,000-plus yards through five years. He’s a bit undersized at 6-2, 233 lbs, but he’s still a duel-threat quarterback in a league that covets such athletes.
While the Giants have plenty of questions to ask in the coming weeks, namely who their head coach will be in 2025, one thing is certain, Big Blue could be picking first in the draft for the first time since they drafted Lawrence Taylor back in 1981. Last we checked, that worked out pretty well.
