Rutgers Outlast Virginia Tech, Improve to 3-0
It wasn’t easy, but a win is a win! And for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, a white-knuckle 26-23 victory over Virginia Tech was exactly that; the club’s third victory in a row to open the season at 3-0. The win marks the fourth consecutive year under Greg Schiano that Rutgers has opened a season with three consecutive victories.
Rutgers pulled out the victory on the leg of kicker Jai Patel, who nailed a 24-yard field goal with 1:56 to go in the game.
It was a clutch moment that was set up by quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, who connected with wide receiver Ian Strong on a 63-yard sprint to the Virginia Tech 12-yard line.
Kalakmanis and Strong had huge days for Rutgers. The former Minnesota quarterback threw for a season-best 269 yards and a touchdown in the win, while Strong totaled a career-high, 110-yards receiving in the victory.
Early Momentum:
Rutgers built a lot of early momentum in their favor, jumping out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on touchdowns by Kyle Monangai and Samuel Brown V.
A safety for linebacker Wes Bailey on a quarterback sack of Virginia Tech’s Kyron Drones proved to be huge, giving Rutgers a 16-7 lead going into halftime.
Brown would add his second rushing touchdown of the day on a five-yard scamper to give RU a 23-7 lead in the third quarter.
All of that proved to be pivotal as Virginia Tech mounted a 16-point run to tie the game at 23 by the late stages of the fourth quarter, setting up Rutgers to swoop in and grab victory.
Rutgers will enjoy a short week this week in preparation for its first conference game of the year, at home, against Washington. The Scarlet Knights and Huskies have only met twice before in their history, with Washington coming away victorious each time. The last meeting between the two was in 2017, a 30-14 Washington win at SHI Stadium.
