Rutgers Captain Mohamed Toure Out for the Season with ACL Tear
Rutgers team captain and linebacker Mohamed Toure has been lost for the season with a torn ACL in his knee according to Head Coach Greg Schiano in his weekly press conference following the conclusion of training camp.
The news comes as Schiano officially named team captains, and the Scarlet Knights begin preparations for their week 1 clash with Howard. Opening night is a week from Thursday.
“We are going to get that fixed up and get him back,” Schiano said. “It’s sad he put so much in to get ready for the year. But that’s the game of football. As a family we surrounded him, and we helped him through the rehab to get him to his goals and aspirations. It’s the next man up at linebacker. Those guys will be ready to play Thursday.”
Schiano added that he’s confident in the group he has, name dropping the work DJ Allen, Moses Walker, Abram Wright and Timmy Hinspeter have put into camp this summer.
“It’s going to be a challenge for sure,” Schiano added. “There might be other positions where we might have some guys who may not be able to play. They are not season ending, but they can keep them out of the games.”
It’s a very tough break for Toure who was named to the Butkus Award Watch List for 2024. After missing all of the 2022 season, Toure came back with vengeance in 2023, playing in all 13 games, amassing 93 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He was also named one of six team captains for 2024.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Schiano announced his team captains would be linebacker Mohamed Toure, quarterback Athan Kaliakamanis; defensive back Robert Longerbeam; defensive back Joe Lusardi; running back Kyle Monangai, and linebacker Tyreem Powell.
