These Are the Hottest Cities in America This Summer
If you think it’s been a hot summer, then you’re right. Sure, there are always pockets of exceptions, but for the most part, it’s been a scorching summer around the world, including in North America. So, what are the hottest cities in America this summer, according to weather experts?
The Hottest Cities in America This Summer
The experts at CNN have a new report out discussing the heat trends of 2024 and the hottest cities in America. They mention that the most extreme heat is in the cities, “because buildings, roads and sidewalks radiate more heat than grass and trees, in what’s known as the urban heat island effect, which can add as much as 20 degrees Fahrenheit to urban temperatures.” It’s true that walking around America’s biggest cities in the dead of summer can be really hot. CNN adds that, “All of the country’s 50 most-populated cities have gotten hotter over the past half century, and all but three are experiencing more ‘extremely hot’ days above 95 degrees, according to a data analysis by the International Institute for Environment and Development, shared exclusively with CNN.”
So, what are the hottest cities in the country this summer? Looking at the top cities with the highest rise in days 95°F or hotter this summer, the first is Las Vegas, Nevada. Vegas has been super hot this summer, counting 83 days at 95°F or hotter and each day in July above 105, according to CNN. The hottest day was 120. Sure, it’s “dry heat,” as they say, but it’s still a lot of heat. San Antonio, Texas, comes right after Las Vegas, followed by Nashville, Tennessee. Jacksonville, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia, round out the top five.
As for the cities that are the hottest in the country and keep getting hotter, the top three are all in Arizona. Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson have experienced the highest number of days of extreme heat, according to CNN. The CNN report also indicates that summers are getting longer, so the mild air is coming in earlier in the season and leaving later. I’m all for this, since I personally like mild Halloween weather. Who wants to get all dressed up in a costume when it’s snowing outside?
If you find yourself in dangerously hot weather, remember to try to stay hydrated; stay in an air-conditioned place; wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing; and just take it easy. Also, have an emergency kit on hand for any severe weather conditions.
