Woody Harrelson: Matthew McConaughey Might Be My Brother
Woody Harrelson weighed in on the possibility that he and longtime friend Matthew McConaughey could be brothers from the same mother. While appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert this week (April 18) with Justin Theroux, the crazy revelation of being half-brothers was brought up by the host.
“Well, I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought,” Harrelson, 61, said. “Because we talked to Ma Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother.” While vacationing in Greece with both Harrelson and McConaughey’s families, Matthew’s mom Mary let them know of the possibility. “We were watching the U.S. team win the World Cup,” he recalled. “And I don’t know, I mentioned something about regrets. And I said, ‘You know, it’s odd that my father has no regrets.'” That’s when “Ma Mac” told Woody, “‘I knew your father.'”
“It was the ellipses I found a little troubling… or interesting,” Harrelson continued. “That ‘I knew your father.'” He described Mary’s pause to be “filled with innuendo,” the Zombieland actor said. Colbert joked, “A pregnant pause.” By doing the math, Harrelson said the year of McConaughey’s birth was nine months before his. “She was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father Jim.”
And Harrelson noted that the True Detective actors “want to go and test,” but for Matthew, “it’s a much more big deal. I mean, he feels like he’s losing a father. But I’m like, ‘No, you’re gaining a different father and a brother!”
