Twitch Makes New Deal Regarding Playing Copyrighted Music
Over the last year the popular streaming platform Twitch.tv has been in a constant controversy regarding streamers using licensed music in their streams. With massive streams on the platform debating over Twitter whether or not it’s right for Twitch to be issuing bans.
Twitch is not the first platform to experience these problems as the popular website YouTube has been having trouble as well for copyright claims. This all steaming from YouTubers receiving false claims or DMCA strikes on their videos.
Resulting in either videos being demonetized or even channel creators being close to losing their channel’s entirely.
Streamers have been pleading with the streaming service to cut a new deal with the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA).
In order to prevent channels from being temporarily banned like popular streamer xQc back in August. Well Twitch provided, however it wasn’t what streamers were hoping for as the new deal looks to be the same as the old one.
With the exception that streamers will now be warned before any past recordings are removed or punishment goes into effect. As well as license holders being able to weigh in on how they want their music represented on the platform.
Twitch has issued a statement regarding this deal saying that it has always been their policy that copyrighted music should not be used by streamers. It seems the only way to avoid getting a DMCA strike is to look for alternatives or delete the video in question before a punishment is issued.
This deal leaves things to be desired by the streaming community, but is certainly a step in the right direction for the partnership between streamers and the music industry.
