New Jersey’s very own Anthony Volpe got his chance to live out a life-long dream: debut with the New York Yankees on Opening Day.

The 21-year old from Watchung, New Jersey, had a fairly quiet day at the plate, going 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a strikeout. He gave Yankees fans a glimpse of how good his eye is at the dish when he drew a seven pitch walk in his first plate appearance in the Majors.

For Volpe, every moment was a cool, new experience.

“It was probably the most fun I’ve had in my life,” he said afterwards.

Volpe was showered with a standing ovation when he was introduced during player introductions, and received cheers for his excellent play in the field at shortstop, including turning a nifty double-play in the sixth inning.

As for his veteran teammates, well they took care of the rest.

Aaron Judge picked up where he left off, cracking a solo home run in his first at bat of the season to give the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. Judge added an RBI single in the seventh inning to push the Yankee lead to 5-0.

Gleyber Torres crushed a two-run bomb in the fourth inning, and D.J. LeMahieu enjoyed his healthy return to the lineup with a RBI single in the seventh as well.

Gerrit Cole got the ball for Bombers, striking out 11 over six innings of work, while holding the Giants to just three hits on 95 pitches.

The Yankees (1-0) and the Giants (0-1) meet up again on Saturday afternoon.
