The dream is over. But the legacy will live on.

The US Men’s National team fell to the Netherlands 3-1 in the Round of 16, ending the United States’ bid to return to the Quarterfinals for the first time in 20 years.

The Netherlands were too much offensively for the U.S. all afternoon. The Dutch scored the games opening goal in the 10 minute mark when Memphis Depay right footed shot crossed through the goal to make it 1-0. The Netherlands made it 2-0 just before the half when Daley Blind hit almost the extact same shot, a right footed shot at the bottom left corner of the center box to put the Dutch up 2-0.

The United States would cut the lead in half on a goal by Haji Wright in the 76th minute, but within five minutes the Dutch responded when Denzel Dumfries nailed the icing on the cake to make it 3-1.

It was a frustrating loss for the US, who dominated possession of the ball, and played a clean game as compared to the Dutch who drew 10 fouls and two yellow cards.

Still, the fact that the US came this far after the program was down for so many years, and the thrill they gave fans across the country will never be forgotten.
