I think when it comes to video games you have two types that are key. First-person shooters and Sports games. Because both can be used to solve arguments.

When I was growing up if my brothers or I were fighting about something, we got on Madden and the winner got whatever they wanted.

Though the question remains, what sports games are the absolute top in their respective field? Well, I certainly know a few of them as they are still loved by generations old and new. I also love how far some of the games have progressed or how much of a creative spin they put on the sport.

Aside from all of that. Sports games are just super fun, you get to feel the excitement of getting a touchdown or hitting a home run without all the blood, sweat, and tears. Well, maybe the sweat part if you’re being a try-hard.

Now some of these may be obvious, however others you might disagree with. But by looking at things like history, sales, and more you may come around. So let’s take a look at the best game that represents some of sports fans’ favorite pass times.

  • Football - Madden NFL

Starting of with one of America’s favorite pass time is football and what better game to represent it than. ‘Madden NFL’. Made by EA the title has sold hundreds of millions of copies since the start of the franchise back in the 80’s the popular football title came to us in a much different name and far worse graphics. While other football games may have iconic characters or even allow you to do otherwise illegal moves. Madden will always find a way to keep things fresh.

  • Basketball - 2k12

Now I wanna admit here, my knowledge of basketball is already quiet low, that is even more so true for basketball videogames. So I asked one of the other guys over here at Fox Sports New Jersey and he said 2k12 was not only the best 2k, but also the best basketball game. You can even go back in time and face off against of the greatest basketball teams to have existed. On top of that, you have graphic updates and as quoted by critics the best commentary in a sports game at that point in time.

  • Olympics - Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Some believe that this title is the best one of the franchise to date, and I agree. Though I want to go one step further. This is the best Olympic title period, it’s fun without totally breaking tradition, you get to play as some of the most recognizable video game character in the world. The only part I tend to disagree with some on is the story mode. I think it was just okay, but it does mix in some Olympic history which I thought was pretty cool, so it’s not all bad.

  • Soccer - Rocket League

Now this might be a bit controversial, but I think Rocket League is such a more interesting game than FIFA. I am not saying FIFA is bad, not even saying that FIFA can’t be considered the best soccer game. However, looking at Rocket League I just don’t they are comparable. As some say Rocket League may be one of if not the greatest sports game of all time. I don’t even play it, but I understand where they’re coming from. Having up to eight friends on a team and controlling rocket powered cars instead of normal players. It gives it the edge for me.

  • Racing - Mario Kart 8 Delux

In terms of racing games, there are very few that have made an impact on players like Mario Kart has. As it has sold over 166 million copies total. Mario Kart 8 accounts for about 52 million of that according to 2022 reports. As for the franchise as a whole it’s just timeless fun for all ages. While it’s not traditional racing. It’s still a favorite mine as me and my friends will target each other so the AI wins. Because even if I don’t win, at least you lose with me. No wonder the franchise is the longest lasting racing series to date.

  • Golf - Golf With Your Friends

Now I’ll admit, it’s hard for me to watch some sports and Golf is one of them. When you combine Golf with crazy custom courses, new rules and most importantly your friends. Now you have my attention. There is nothing more devious than waiting for your friend to get near the hole, to just knock them back the way they came. Though if you are looking for a more traditional experience the latest EA Sports PGA Tour that was announced not even a week ago may be your game.

  • General Sports - Wii Sports

Now this title I feel needs no introduction as I feel Wii Sports is one of the most iconic sports titles out there. It is Nintendo’s best selling Wii game and has created tons of childhood memories. The best thing about it is that you can play it alone or with friends and you have a wide variety as well! So it doesn’t matter if you want to bowl or play ball. The only issue I have is that you’d need a Wii to still play it. Of course you could get the latest Nintendo Switch Sports (2022), but I’ve heard mixed reviews so I’ll have to look more into it before I form any type of review.

  • Alpine Snow Sports - Steep

Now it’s a shame that there aren’t many new sports titles that involve snow sports. With Steep being released in 2016. Naturally it would be considered the best, because of all it’s main competitors were made in the early to late 2000’s. Gaming has made huge technological advancements since 2016 so I would love to see new tech combined with a game like Steep. Gamers feel in love with the game because of it’s diverse selection of snowboarding, skiing, wingsuit gliding and more. But also because of the first person element combined with stunning visuals.

  • Baseball - MVP Baseball 2005

While I never got to experience this game, even I know that it brought on some of the biggest and most important changes to a baseball game. We saw aspects like the pitch meter which allowed for an increase or decrease of speed for pitchers. Which made it naturally harder for the hitter. However, we also were given hitters eye which allows players to predict the type of pitch. So while advancements have been made in graphic, this game is the one of the ones that’s most remembered.

  • Combat Sports - WWE Superstars Smackdown vs Raw 2010

For me, the best combat sport titles come from the world of wrestling. Maybe this is nostalgia talking, but the 2010 title Smackdown vs Raw is a personal best. At fairly pointed out by critics the selection isn’t that big compared to the newer titles, but I feel in love with the game modes and amount of customization you could have with your own wrestler. The series has made some recent progress after a disaster release in 2020. So I look forward to see where it goes from here.
