Caleb McConnell made a heroic return to the lineup after missing Saturday’s contest in Wisconsin due to a back injury. Unfortunately it was not enough as Rutgers struggled offensively against the Wolverines, falling 58-45, Rutgers fourth loss in its last five games.

At 17-11 and 9-8 in the Big Ten, Rutgers is currently ranked ninth in the conference standings; just two weeks ago after a win over Michigan State at MSG they were in second. With three games left in the regular season, Rutgers must get back on track at Penn State on Sunday who is also 17-11 and 8-9 in conference.

“We had missed opportunities. A couple steals, our turnovers, free throws, that kind of thing. It’s a game of runs. We came out of the blocks pretty good and then they kind of got a run on us. We kept fighting back and forth. We just could never get going,” head coach Steve Pikiell said.

Senior guard Cam Spencer led the way with 11 points. Senior guard Paul Mulcahy scored nine points and added six assists. Mulcahy now sits in sole possession of fourth place on the all-time assists list at Rutgers.

Junior center Clifford Omoruyi had his 12th double-double of the season with ten points and ten rebounds.
In his first game back since the back injury, McConnell finished with seven points.

Rutgers visits Penn State on Sunday at noon.
