New York Mets fans woke up with a little giddiness in their step on Friday morning after word came down around 9 p.m. Thursday that the Mets had agreed to an eight-year $162 million contract extension for free agent center fielder Brandon Nimmo.

The Amazin’s also signed veteran reliever David Robertson to a one-year, $10 million deal.

The reunion with Nimmo was a tad surprising, because rumors early Thursday were that the Mets might lose Nimmo to other suitors, and that the Toronto Blue Jays were “in love” with Nimmo’s abilities.

Instead, owner Steve Cohen pulled out his magic checkbook and got the deal done.

Nimmo was a no-brainer to bring back. His defense greatly improved last year, and he has been a steady top of the order hitter for the Mets who hits for average and gets on base. In addition his infectious personality makes him a leading candidate, along with Pete Alonso, to be the next team captain.

Nimmo enjoyed a career year in 2022 for the Amazin’s. He played the most games of his career (151), cracked 16 home runs and drove in 64. He also scored 102 runs and walked 71 times.
In his career Nimmo is a .269 hitter with a .385 on base percentage.

As for Robertson, the Mets wanted to get him at the deadline this past season, but the Chicago Cubs shipped him to Philadelphia. Robertson had a 2.70 ERA in 22 games for the Phillies in the regular season, and a 1.17 ERA for Philly in the playoffs.

An owner of 157 career saves, Robertson started his career with the Yankees.

He will likely slide into the set-up role behind Edwin Diaz.
