UCONN 76 – San Diego State 59

There was a Jersey flavor in Houston as the confetti fell on the University of Connecticut Men’s Basketball team on Monday night. The Huskies completed one of the most dominant tournament runs in history with a decisive 17-point victory over San Diego State, solidifying the program’s fifth National Championship. For Head Coach Dan Hurley, it was his first national title as a collegiate head coach, but there was an aura of familiarity to it all.

His father, Bob Hurley Sr. won four national titles and 26 state titles as the head coach of St. Anthony’s over a span of 45 years from 1972 to 2017. When asked about adding to his families legacy, Dan said simply, “For me I have had my own path, my own journey. People focus more on the sideline antics then my body of work over the course of my career. There is a certain level of validation that comes from there. I’m from Jersey City, and this is how Jersey City people act.”

Hurley’s Huskies did to the Tournament what many of his father’s teams did at St. Anthony’s, shoot the ball with great precision and play suffocating defense. That formula helped UConn blown out all six of its opponents in the tournament by double digits in every game. By winning every game by an average of 20-points, the 2023 UCONN Huskies were a half point shy of the mark set by North Carolina back in 2009.

Tristen Newton led the way with 19 points. Angelo Sanogo had 17 points and 10 boards, and Jordan Hawkins had 16 points.
