On a normal day, the talk from the Yankees 4-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians would be all about Oswaldo Cabrera providing the game-winning, two-out double for the Bombers in the top of the ninth inning. How about Franchy Cordero’s fourth home run of this road trip, this one that tied the game at three in the eighth inning, setting up Cabrera’s ninth inning heroics?

Yes, there was plenty to cheer about for Yankees fans in the late stages, but earlier it was nothing short of frustrating.

The Guardians built an early 3-0 lead thanks in major part to a controversial moment when Cleveland’s Josh Naylor blooped a soft liner to shallow center field that Aaron Hicks tried to make a play on. In real time, it appeared that Hicks made the catch, threw back to second for an inning ending double-play, but there was a catch. Cleveland called for a challenge some 15-seconds after the allotted time to challenge any play, and the umpires granted that challenge.

The play was reversed, and Hicks was ruled to have trapped the ball instead. The reversal resulted in a two-run first inning for Cleveland.

Yankees skipper Aaron Boone popped out of the dugout and let Larry Vanover’s crew have it, before getting tossed for the first time this year.

Fans reacted wildly online the rest of the afternoon.
