FC Motown falls short of second NPSL title
Madison, NJ — Scattered lightning storms and a two-hour delay wasn’t enough to dampen the excitement for the San Francisco-based soccer club, El Farolito, who came away with a 2-1 victory over FC Motown (Morristown, NJ) in a wild battle of two unbeaten teams at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
The victory cemented a perfect 14-0-3 record for El Farolito, and its first ever NPSL (National Premier Soccer League) championship.
After a scoreless first half that saw both El Farolito and FC Motown exchange a grand total of six yellow cards, the clubs exchanged a combined three goals in a matter of eight minutes to the delight of an energetic crowd at Ranger Stadium.
The scoring opened in the 54th minute when El Farolito’s Jhohann Yabur connected on a shot into the lower left corner to give the California-based squad a 1-0 lead. That lead was short-lived.
A minute later FC Motown finally answered when former NY Red Bulls Academy star Christopher Bermudez nailed a shot past goalie Johan Lizarralde to knot the game up at 1-1.
In the end El Farolito’s Erik Arias nailed the game winner, drilling a 12-yard shot past the outstretched hands of goalie Joshua Shaffer in the 62nd minute.
Motown wouldn’t score again, although it had plenty of chances. El Farolito’s Jonathan Valdivia was ejected from the game in the 68th minute for a second yellow card infraction, limiting El Farolito to 10 men. FC Motown had two opportunities to tie the game again on corner kicks, but each time, their kicks were cleared away.
FC Motown tried valiantly, even with seven minutes added in stoppage time, but couldn’t pull even.
NOTES:
Saturday night’s contest between the top two teams in the NPSL was hit by a two lengthy lightning delays before kick-off. The game was originally slated for a 7 p.m. first kick, but didn’t truly begin until a little before 9 p.m. It did not dampen the mood, and the crowd was into it from the jump.
FC Motown Hero of the Night
What an effort by FC Motown goalie Joshua Schaffer. In addition to having to guard against one of the best teams out of the NPSL, Schaffer had to leave the game in the first half after sustaining a gash to the head when Kipre Sacre accidentally crashed into the goalie while he tried to block a shot.
Schaffer had his head wrapped in a bandage and returned in the second half and played the rest of the night.
FC Motown has been in the Championship game of the NPSL each of the last three seasons, winning it all in 2022. For El Farolito, Saturday night’s win was its first NPSL crown, but second national title as the team, then known as Club Deportivo Mexico, captured the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship in 1993.
RUTGERS CONNECTIONS:
It is interesting to note that two current Scarlet Knights are members of FC Motown: Nick Collins and Erick Ruiz. Both played large portions of the game against El Farolito, with Ruiz getting the start.
