Tyrese Maxey Channels Reggie Miller in Sixers Stunner vs. Knicks
There will be a Game 6 after all.
Thanks to spirited shooting from downtown by Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey, and a complete collapse by the New York Knicks, the Philadelphia 76ers walked away with a 112-106 overtime victory at Madison Square Garden to force a Game 6 on Thursday night.
With New York clinging to a three-point lead with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Tyrese Maxey brought the ball upcourt, took his shot from the logo, and drilled a three-pointer to tie the game to force overtime.
That play was just one of two incredible plays by Maxey down the stretch that oozed greatness. A moment earlier, he nailed a three-pointer, while drawing a foul on the Knicks Mitchell Robinson to complete a four-point play that cut the Knicks lead down to 96-94.
THE REGGIE MILLER COMPARISON
The efforts of Maxey were so incredible, it could live in Madison Square Garden lore if the Sixers find a way to win this series. In fact many are already comparing it to Reggie Miller’s clutch performances against the Knicks in the playoffs in the mid-90s.
It didn’t help that Jalen Brunson went totally cold for the Knicks in OT. He missed two huge three-points jumpers, and had a costly turnover when — at the last second — opted to pass the ball out to an unsuspecting Isaiah Hartenstein.
The unforced error eventually led to a three-point play for Joel Embiid for Philadelphia. Embiid finished his night with a double-double, 19 points and 10 boards.
Despite the poor shooting in overtime, Brunson was still the Knicks leading scorer, finishing with 40 points. O.G. Anunoby finished with 17 points, and Josh Hart finished with 18 points.
ALWAYS TOMORROW…
All is not lost for New York. Game 6 is Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Should be an incredible battle. We’ll have it right here on Fox Sports New Jersey at 7 p.m.
