Rangers and Devils Brawl Blows Up the Internet
The New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils are no strangers to hating one another. The two sides have had a disgust for each other that dates back to the mid 90’s when both teams were Stanley Cup contenders in 1994 and 1995.
On Thursday the Rangers – Devils rivalry took a whole new turn when all 10 players on the ice for the face-off decided to turn the game into their personal street fight before the puck ever dropped.
The focus of the fight was centered around Rangers rookie Matt Rempe and the Devils’ Kurtis MacDermid. Rempe is no stranger to fights. He has been New York’s main instigator all season long. Earlier this season against Jersey, Rempe knocked out defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler with a hard elbow into the glass, sending Siegenthaler to the ground. Rempe was suspended for four games.
The Devils never forgot obviously.
Eight skaters were ejected, minus the goaltenders who didn’t get involved. The ejected include New York defensemen Jacob Trouba, K’Andre Miller, Forward Barclay Goodrow, and Rempe. For the Devils: defensemen Kevin Bahl, and John Marino, and forwards Chris Tierney and MacDermid were all kicked out.
Rangers and Devils Brawl Social Media Explosion
Rangers legend Henrik Lundqvist was smiling while watching the brawl.
There was even an upper deck angle!
Peter Laviolette
Rangers head Coach Peter Laviolette didn’t mince words in backing his players for the fight.
Heck, Laviolette even got into it with Devils Interim Head Coach Travis Green.
FIGHTS and MORE FIGHTS!
The fighting didn’t just stop there. Some five minutes into the first period Will Cuylle and Dawson Mercer started throwing haymakers at one another against the glass.
There was a Game!
Believe it or not, there was a game that took place. The Rangers won 4-3 over the Devils. Third period goals by Kaapo Kakko and Chris Kreider put in the deciding goals for the Blue Shirts. Kreider’s goal came on a powerplay with about four minutes to go in the contest.
