Brian Cashman Says Yankees Were Engaged At Deadline Despite Lack of Movement
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman sat in front of the media on Tuesday and tried to explain why the Bronx Bombers were fairly quiet during the MLB Trade Deadline. It wasn’t pretty.
The Yankees were the last team to make a move at the deadline, acquiring minor league pitcher Spencer Howard from the Texas Rangers, and reliever Kenyan Middleton from the Chicago White Sox.
"You'd rather be in a more defined spot where you'd be 3.5 games up in the postseason or 10 games back. It'd give you a better picture, but that's not where we've put ourselves."

“We approached this deadline where we drove in different lanes, listening to other opportunities. As we got out of the gate a little bit in the second half. The frustration of how we were playing we became more cautious buyers. We spoke to teams who were sellers that got hot that suddenly became buyers. It wasn’t a deep trade deadline in terms of options,” Cashman said.
“We stayed engaged every step of the way.”
Middleton is currently on the injury list and would serve mostly as a mop-up duty reliever. Howard was once considered a top prospect for the Rangers, but his ERA is 7.20 in four years at the Major League level. The Yankees optioned Howard to the minors immediately after the deal.
So what are the Yankees left with? Not much. For a team that is hitting at only .219 as a team post-All-Star Break is alarming, to say the least. Injuries haven’t helped, i.e. Aaron Judge, Josh Donaldson, and Harrison Bader to name a few, but a lot of the Yankees star players haven’t hit the ball.
Giancarlo Stanton is hitting only .182 since the Break; D.J. LeMahieu has only two RBI during that stretch. Anthony Rizzo is hitting only .177; Anthony Volpe is hitting only .160 since the All-Star Break.
Judge just came back from the injury list, but can only carry the rest of the team so far.
"I do think we do have the talent. We do have the capabilities. Saying it is one thing, I know watching it lately hasn't been anything close to what you'd feel comfortable with."

“There wasn’t a big thing to add that would solve the immediate problems that we have,” Cashman explained.
The Yankees (55-52) fell to the Rays 5-2 on Tuesday. They are 11 games out of first in the AL East, and 3.5 games out of the wild card with the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Angels in front of them.
