Alonso Powers Mets Past Bombers in Bronx Opener
METS 9 – YANKEES 3
Pete Alonso went deep twice, and the New York Mets pounded their cross town rivals, the New York Yankees 9-3 on Tuesday night in the Bronx, the first of a short two-game series between the rivals.
Alonso’s three-run line-drive home run in the top of the third inning staked the Mets to a 4-0 lead, and they would never look back. In fact Alonso went deep again in the sixth to push that Mets lead to 5-0. The All-Star first baseman finished the night with five RBI, the most RBIs in a game this season for Alonso. His previous high was four RBI, which he reached three times this year, most recently on May 19 against the Cleveland Guardians.

Daniel Voglebach joined the fun with a solo shot of his own in the sixth inning to push the Mets up fat, 6-0.
Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor each enjoyed big nights at the dish. Lindor had three hits and a run scored, while McNeil finished with a pair of hits — including a two-run double in the eighth that staked the Mets to an insurmountable 9-3 advantage.

The Yankees had no answers for Mets starter Justin Verlander. The 40-year old pitcher held the Yankees scoreless on two-hits over six innings of work. Verlander improved to 5-5 on the year with a 3.24 ERA.
It was not as much fun for Domingo German, who was charged with six runs on seven hits, despite striking out nine. German is now under .500 at 6-7 on the year; his ERA ballooned to 4.77.
TONIGHT
The Mets and Yanks wrap up the Subway Series tonight in the Bronx when Jose Quintana goes up against Carlos Rodon, with first pitch at 7:05.
WHAT’S AT STAKE?
The Mets are trying to win the Subway Series for the second time in the last three seasons; both teams split the four games last season. In fact the two clubs have split this series six times over the past decade. The Yankees haven’t won this series in the regular season since 2017.
