If Yankees Hall of Famer Derek Jeter had it his way, Juan Soto would be Yankee by the deadline.
The Yankee Captain made no bones about what he felt his team should do come the August 1 Trade Deadline when he spoke candidly about the subject on the Fox Sports desk after last night's All-Star Game. If the San Diego Padres, who are currently 8.5 games out of first place in the NL West continue to freefall, they should consider trading superstar Juan Soto. And the Yankees should come calling.
Jeter's logic is based on the possibility that Aaron Judge could be out an extended period of time with a toe injury. When fellow ex-Yankee Alex Rodriguez asked the Captain where Soto should play, Jeter basically said whatever works (left or right field).
The reaction from Yankees Nation of course was of legend.
Meanwhile back on the desk, Red Sox Hall of Famer David "Big Papi" Ortiz was quick to spray Soto with "Yankee repellent."
Soto is no stranger to New York trade rumors. Last year at this time he was the subject of intense trade rumors between the Washington Nationals and New York Mets. It got to the point that Big Papi hit Soto with a dollar gun while he and Mets slugger Pete Alonso were guests on the desk. Of course, Soto was eventually traded from Washington to San Diego.
Soto still has two years left on his current deal and is free agent in 2025. Will he choose to come to New York by then, if he is not traded here first? And if he does come to the Big Apple, which team will get him?
If a trade were to happen in the next few weeks it would almost certainly cost the Yankees and/or the Mets dearly in prospects.
