Could we have a return of Rutgers vs. Princeton in Men's Basketball?

According to a story published this week by NJ.com, it is a very distinct possibility.  Rutgers is in talks with Princeton to tip off the 2023-24 season at the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton.

Rutgers and Princeton have not squared off against one another in 10 years, the last being in December of 2013 when Princeton beat Rutgers 78-73.

The two old Central Jersey rivals date back 116 years and have met 120 times with Princeton holding a 75-45 edge in the series.

WHY NOW IS A GOOD TIME FOR RIVALRY RENEWAL?

Both clubs are coming off appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Rutgers has been an annual participant the past three seasons, getting as far as the Round of 32 during the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Rutgers failed to make the Tournament this past season, settling instead for an NIT Bid, an opening game they lost to Hofstra in heart-breaking fashion 88-86.

Princeton not only made it to the tournament, but they also advanced to the Sweet 16, upsetting Arizona and Missouri along the way.

MORE JERSEY VS. JERSEY GAMES

The Central Jersey battle isn't the only one that will take place this season. Rutgers will face in-state rival Seton Hall on December 9 at Prudential Center in Newark with the Pirates as the designated home team.

On the other hand, the Princeton Tigers will face the 2022 NCAA Tournament darlings, St. Peter's on November 27 at Princeton.

The complete schedule for both programs, as well as the Rutgers and Princeton Women's teams, will be available later this summer.
