First Half Champions Once Again, Patriots Return to Playoffs

For the second straight season the Somerset Patriots are first half champions!

The Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees punched their ticket to the postseason in September with a dominating 12-1 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at a rainy and windy TD Bank Ballpark on Friday night.

Wearing their alternate Marvel Defender uniforms, the Patriots played the role of defending champions to a T. They were brilliant.

Everson Pereira and Austin Wells each homered and drove in three.

Trey Sweeney continues to rake, he led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer that jump-started the proceedings for the Patriots.

Pereira followed with a two-run bomb that gave Somerset a 3-0 lead.

Overall Somerset hit five home runs on the night with T.J. Rumfield and Tyler Hardman also getting into the long ball action.

All the runs went to the good of starter Matt Sauer who made his return to Somerset, tossing 4.1 innings of two-hit baseball against the Fisher Cats.

How incredible has this Patriots run been? Well, they trailed Portland by 5.5 games on May 17, and have rallied off a record of 20-12 in the last 32 ballgames to propel themselves past Portland, and into first place.

Now the Patriots know, as they continue to develop some incredible talents for the New York Yankees, they will have a great shot to repeat as Eastern League Champions come the fall.
