Whether it’s recreational or social gambling, either way, you’re willing to risk something you value in the hope of getting something of even greater value. The personal-finance website WalletHub released its report on 2023’s Most Gambling Addicted States.

In order to call out the states where gambling addiction is most prevalent, they compared the 50 states across several key metrics. The data set ranges from the presence of illegal gambling operations to lottery sales per capita to the share of adults with gambling disorders.

Where does New Jersey rank?

According to the report, New Jersey made the top 10 in spot number six. The home of Atlantic City almost tied for first when it comes to gambling-related arrests. California, Louisiana, Delaware, and Nevada had the most. New Jersey also had one of the highest percentages of adults with gambling disorders.

The most gambling-addicted states.

On the report, Nevada, South Dakota, and Montana were listed as the most gambling-addicted states. Though they found that South Dakota and Oklahoma have almost as many casinos and gaming machines as the state of Nevada.

The least gambling-addicted states.

When it comes to the least gambling-addicted states, Alaska, Vermont, and Utah were at the bottom of the list.  Out of these three states, Utah has the least amount of lottery sales per capita.

Also, the study found that Mississippi and Minnesota share the highest percentage of gambling addicts. States including California, Louisiana, Delaware and Nevada have the most gambling-related arrests.

While the gambling industry made a record $60 billion in revenue last year, U.S. consumers experience over $100 billion per year in total gambling losses annually. Gambling can become a real medical condition known as a gambling disorder.

It affects about 1 to 3 percent of all U.S. adults. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Gambling can stimulate the brain’s reward system much like drugs such as alcohol can, leading to addiction.”

4 New Jersey Cities Make Best Party Cities in the US List

New Jersey knows how to get down. According to Bonus Finder, four New Jersey cities have been ranked as some of the “best party cities in the United States.”

The casino review site compiled the list of United States cities based on several attributes the city had to have. Bonus Finder looked at the following criteria:

  • Music Events
  • Bars
  • Nightclubs
  • Late Night Food Venues
  • Hotels
  • Casinos
  • Stripclubs

The site even had your pockets in mind when determining where is the best place to go for a great night out. Below are some factors that Bonus Finder considered in their ranking:

  • Average Price of a Drink
  • Average Price of a Hotel Room
  • Average Taxi Cost from the Airport to the City Center

Lastly, (and maybe most importantly, depending on who you ask), the site also considered which clubs and events had the latest “last call at the bar.”

The site reviewed “the number of bars, hotels, nightclubs, casinos, stripclubs, and late night food venues were calculated per 10,000 people. Each city has a normalized score out of 10 on each of the factors, before taking an average total normalized score across each of these scores to reach our final overall score out of 10.”

Take a look at the three New Jersey cities that made the top 20 of their list and their final scores below:
