The 2023 MLB season is in full swing and with that we get to see what players are meeting expectations and which ones are falling behind. However, MLB fans and even executives are debating which of these two rookie players will have more of an impact on the field.
According to MLB.com Anthony Volpe for the Yankees and Jordan Walker for the Cardinals are the subject of debate when it comes to which player will have a better season. As both are making their MLB debut and they were both in the in the top five for MLB prospects this year, Walker in 4th and Volpe in 5th .
Well with a total of twenty votes an overwhelming majority of them went to New Jersey's own Volpe. Who secured fifteen of the votes. Some of the executives claim that Vople's position on shortstop will help him push forward to improve his WAR. Ultimately Antony's WAR value is what helped give him the edge over Walker.
Another major point is that while in the field Walker, is rotating between third and the outfield. Which some say may cause a few bumps due to the constant switching. However, each player has made strides to be where they are now. Especially considering both made it onto their respective opening day roosters. And in Volpe's case not only is he Yankees number one prospect, but also the youngest position player to start on opening since Derek Jeter in 96'. Walker, also earned an honor as the youngest Cardinals position player to make his MLB debut in an Opening Day lineup. He is one year younger than Volpe so one thing is for certain both players are at the top of their game and fans can't get enough of them.
It's great to see considering that after being drafted Volpe, was sent to play for New Jersey's own Somerset Patriots in which he helped lead them to their first championship title since 2015.
Nimmo Guides Mets in Much Needed Opening Victory
The New York Mets continue their run as baseball's best team on Opening Day. Don't believe me? It's true. With the Mets 5-3 win over the Miami Marlins on Thursday, the Mets improved to 41-13 all time on Opening Day, the best win percentage of any Major League squad on baseball's special day.
And it was a special day, considering the day started with some sobering news when word came down that veteran pitcher Justin Verlander was diagnosed with a low grade muscle strain in his right shoulder, and was placed on the Injury List, (I know here we go again!)
On the field, Brandon Nimmo was the star of the day for the Metropolitans.
His sac fly to left in the top of the third inning drove in a svelte Daniel Voglebach to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
Later, with the game tied at three in the seventh inning, Nimmo provided the keynote when he lined a two-run double to straight away center field that scored Eduardo Escobar and Omar Narvaez that gave the Mets a 5-3 lead.
Max Scherzer had an uneven day. He was brilliant for five innings, hold the Marlins to a single hit. He got crushed in the sixth inning, and excited after giving up a 3-0 lead.
The Mets bullpen was impressive as Drew Smith, Brooks Raley and David Robertson combined to blank the Fish over the final three innings. Robertson got his first save in the stead of Edwin Diaz.
