Justin Verlander held his first ever press conference before the New York media since singing a two-year contract with the New York Mets a few weeks ago.

"This off-season was interesting for me. It was the first time going through a normal free agent process. Steve (Cohen) and Billy (Eppler) reached out early on. I had a lovely conversation with Steve, and it wasn't so much about baseball, it was about getting to know one another. He wants to make this franchise amazing," Verlander said.

"This organization took a tremendous step forward last year. The answers were tremendous and I took a leap of faith, and I feel that leap of faith paid off. I can't wait to be part of something, making that vision that Steve and Alex have to make this a championship ball club."

Verlander is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, capturing his third such crown last season with a 1.84 ERA and 18 wins, exactly a year off of Tommy John Surgery. Verlander won his second World Series title with the Houston Astros this past October.
