Iconic N.J. Ice Cream Shop To Close After 88 Years
An iconic New Jersey ice cream shop will be closing its doors after 88 years of serving its community. Bischoff’s Ice Cream located in Teaneck, New Jersey has decided to serve its last scoop on December 31, 2022 according to NJ Advance Media.
“We’re closing for good on New Year’s Eve,” the shop owner Steven Mather told the publication earlier this month.
The Mather family has owned the ice cream and candy store in the center of Teaneck since 1934. Bischoff’s is closing its doors because of financial difficulties.
“The supply chain isn’t there for all the products we need,” says Anita Mather per PIX11. “The cost of everything is increasing.”
The old-fashioned ice cream shop offered 40 flavors of ice cream and also sold ice milks, sherberts and ices.
Bischoff’s wasn’t just an ice cream parlour either. Loyal customers also enjoyed their double cheeseburgers, roast beef sandwiches, and seafood salads.
Albert Bischoff started the business more than four generations ago, passing the business down through his daughters.The first shop opened near the Hippodrome Theater in New York City in the late 1800s before relocating in 1934 to Teaneck, according to the company’s website.
The shop stayed true to its roots with its decor, staff uniforms and menu offerings. “We offer an old-fashioned ice cream soda fountain experience complete with spinning stools at the counter, wait staff wearing paper hats and bow ties, and egg creams,” the website says.
