Rutgers Women’s Soccer Eliminated from Big Ten Tournament
No. 20 Rutgers came up short in the opening round of the Women’s Big Ten Tournament, falling 2-1 to No. 12 Northwestern, who was ranked second in this year’s tournament.
Riley Tiernan got Rutgers on the board early when she connected on a shot a little under eight minutes into the contest on a feed from Sara Brocious and Sam Kroeger to give Rutgers an early 1-0 lead.
Northwestern answered in the 22nd minute when Rowan Lapi tallied her sixth goal of the season, knotting the game up at one a piece.
Per Rutgers Athletics “Shortly after, Becci Fluchel had an excellent chance at the same far post that Tiernan scored earlier, but the Northwestern defense just barely got back in time to disrupt the opportunity and keep the game knotted. The two sides went into halftime tied at 1-1 and with Northwestern leading in shots on goal, 4-2.
“The Wildcats increased pressure in the second half, which paid off in the 53rd, when a bouncing insert got passed both teams and snuck into the corner of the net. Nicole Doucette was credited with the goal. The score held up as the game-winner as Northwestern’s defense clamped down and allowed just three Rutgers shots, one of which was on target, over the final 45 minutes”
Rutgers will now await word on their placement in the NCAA Tournament, with selection scheduled for November 7.
