New York Knicks Survive In Overtime
The New York Knicks beat the Charlotte Hornets 134-131 in an overtime thriller Wednesday night. Jalen Brunson scored 27 points and hit the go-ahead basket in overtime for the Knicks.
Brunson had a double-double with 13 assists and seven rebounds in the contest. RJ Barrett scored 22 points and Julius Randle scored 17, leading the Knicks to a 3-1 record their best start in 10 years.
Brunson hit a 3-pointer with 3:14 left in overtime to take the lead for good.
”We kept fighting,” Brunson said. ”We found a way to win this game. We stayed poised and kept finding plays to make at the end of the game.”
For Charlotte, Gordon Hayward led them in scoring with 21 points, and P.J Washington, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Jalen McDaniels each had 17. The Hornets pulled within one after Washington hit a deep two to cut the lead down to one with five seconds left in overtime. Barrett was fouled on the next play and hit both free throws.
The Knicks took a 12-point lead with 2:56 left in the third off a Julius Randle layup. In the fourth, the Hornets closed the gap and took a five-point lead of 120-115 with two minutes left in the fourth.
The Knicks got some help off the bench from Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley. Toppin had nine points and was 3-4 from beyond the arc. Quickley had 11 points on 3-6 shooting. The Knicks exercised its four-year team option on both players and its third-year team option on Quentin Grimes. Grimes has yet to play this season due to a left foot injury.
Early in the season but Brunson has shown why the Knicks signed him for so much money this season. He is averaging 20 points per game and 8.5 assists per game. Wednesday night he hit big shots at the end to help the Knicks close out the game.
