The Knicks opened up the season on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies on October 19. Grizzlies star Ja Morant had 34 points and nine assists leading his team to an overtime victory 115-112.
For Memphis, Santi Aldama had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Desmond Bane had 16 points. Aldama is in his second season, he filled in for Jaren Jackson Jr. who is recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot.
Julius Randle led the Knicks with 24 points and 11 rebounds, Cam Reddish came off the bench and had 22 points and shot 9 for 15 from the field. Isaiah Hartenstein scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds. The Knicks' offseason addition Jalen Brunson had 15 points, six rebounds, and nine assists. Brunson did not commit one turnover in his Knicks debut. That is an encouraging sign for the Knicks going forward.
The Knicks were down by as many as 19 points in the third but rallied to take a lead with 3:32 left in regulation. In the final seconds of the game, Reddish hit a three in the corner to tie the game at 108. Morant had a layup go in with less than a second left on the clock but it got waved off after Brunson took a charge on him sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Grizzles took a 115-112 lead with a Tyus Jones three with 47.8 seconds left. Evan Fournier had a chance to send the game to second overtime but missed the three as time expired.
“There’s a lot to build off of,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. “What I want them to see is that it’s one or two plays here or three. That’s the difference between winning and losing.”
Thibodeau added that he loved the fight they had, was not pleased with the fact that they dug themselves into a hole but loved that they fought back.
RJ Barrett did not have a good game with 11 points, shooting 3 for 18 from the field. In games like this, they will need Barrett to show up.
The Knicks' next game will be Friday a home opener against the Detroit Pistons.
