Mets Struggles vs. Bad Teams Continues
CUBS 5 – METS 2
Once again, the Mets struggled in the opener of a series against one of the National League’s lesser teams, falling to the Chicago Cubs 5-2 on Monday night. While the loss is frustrating and drops the Mets to 5-5 in their last ten games, New York maintains a 1.5 game lead over the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East.
Chris Bassitt couldn’t get out of the fourth inning, after giving up five runs. It was his shortest outing since he went 3-1/3 innings against the San Diego Padres back on July 8.
Rafael Ortega’s solo blast in the second inning gave Chicago the early 1-0 lead, and they would never look back. Zach McKinstry added a two-run bomb in the third inning, and Ortega came back to add another RBI on a single in the fourth inning to help build the Cubs 4-0 lead.
The Mets only two runs came on a RBI single by James McCann, who remains hot at the plate. Francico Lindor’s solo homer in the bottom of the ninth was the final highlight on a long night in Flushing.
The heckling worked I guess? 🤷♂️
