New York Jets and Giants Wrap Up Preseason
JETS 31 – GIANTS 27
The New York Jets and New York Giants wrapped up the 2022 preseason in their annual clash with Gang Green coming away with a late touchdown rally by preseason hero quarterback Chris Streveler, who tossed the game-winner on fourth and goal to Calvin Jackson with 0:39 seconds to go.
While Steveler is a long shot to make the Jets, the victory marked the third straight game in which he brought the Jets back to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Overall he was 10-of-13 for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
Considering his success in preseason, it will be interesting to see if the Jets want to place Streveler on the practice squad to start the year, especially with Zach Wilson’s injury status still up in the air, and the Jets likely to carry just Joe Flacco and Mike White on the active roster.
Speaking of Flacco and White, both did well. Flacco was 7-of-12 for 76 yards. He did throw a costly interception that was returned for a touchdown by Austin Calitro that gave Big Blue a 10-3 lead.
White was better, completing 13 of 17 passes for 170 yards and two scores for the Jets.
The other story for Gang Green had to be Denzel Mims. Rumored to be disgruntled and requesting a trade due to his lack of opportunities, Mims made the most of his final preseason action, catching seven balls for 102 yards and a touchdown.
As for the Giants, none of Big Blue’s starters played on Sunday. However, there was a concern for backup quarterback Tyrod Talyor who left the game with a back injury after sustaining a vicious hit by Jets rookie defensive end Michael Clemens.
Talyor left the game and didn’t return. Head Coach Brian Daboll said afterward that Taylor should be ‘ok.’
Davis Webb played the rest of the game for the Giants under center and was excellent, completing 30-of-38 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown. It was an impressive summer for Davis who is hoping the Giants keep three quarterbacks with Daniel Jones the incumbent starter.
Cut down the day to the standard 53 players is on Tuesday. The regular season begins in earnest on September 11 with the Giants down in Tennessee against the Titans, while the Jets host the Baltimore Ravens.
