Rutgers Men’s Soccer Opens Season with ‘W’
Rutgers men’s soccer is off to a flying start for the 2022 season after a 4-2 win over Omaha on Thursday night.
MD Meyers opened the game with back-to-back goals, while Pablo Avila and Ian Abbey also scored for the Scarlett Knights. Freshman goalie Ciaran Dalton played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves.
“Great start tonight for us,” head coach Jim McElderry said. “We conceded early and responded well to be up 3-1 at the half. Lots to still improve on, but very proud of this group.”
Trailing Omaha 1-0 at the nine minute mark, Rutgers found the back of the net with Meyers scored his first goal off an assist by Pablo Avila.
Five minutes later, Meyers scored again, this time on a penalty kick to put RU up 2-1 at the 16:13 mark of the first half.
Less than six minutes later, Avila found the back of the net when his shot caromed off the post and into the net for the score to make it 3-1.
Rutgers added one more goal at the 50th minute on a shot by Ian Abbey to make it 4-1.
“It’s hard to win games on the road in Division I men’s soccer, so we will enjoy it tonight and start preparing tomorrow for a top Creighton team on Sunday,” McElderry added.
