Paul O’Neill Jersey Retirement, Yankees Finally Win a game
One of the grittiest players on those beloved mid to late 90s Yankees teams, Paul O’Neill had his jersey retired by the Bronx Bombers on Sunday, leading into the Yankees 4-2 win over Toronto on Sunday.
O’Neill played eight seasons in New York after a very successful first half of his career with the Cincinnati Reds. He brought not only postseason and World Series experience to the Bronx when he came to the Big Apple in 1993, but he wore his emotions on his sleeve becoming one of the most beloved players in the eyes of Yankees fans. He was a key cog of four World Series titles. A four time All-Star, AL Batting Champion in 1994, and his powerful, left handed swing, went hand in hand with fellow left-handed slugger Tino Martinez to create an intimidating middle of the order for Joe Torre’s teams.
O’Neill, who retired in 2001 after that year’s World Series has served as a color commentator since on the Yankees YES network.

Meanwhile, the current Yankees avoided the sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, winning 4-2. Andrew Bennitendi went 2-for-3 with a two-run bomb in the seventh inning to break a two-all tie. The Yankees host the Mets, weather permitting, Monday night at 7:05.
