It was a long day's journey into night, but for Mets fans, it was well worth the wait. New York found itself down three different times on Sunday, and still found a way to come back and stun the Phillies 10-9 thanks to two mammoth home runs by left fielder Mark Canha.
Canha who has been sizzling on this recent Mets road trip, had arguably his best day in a Mets uniform when he launched a three-run homer to left that tied the game at seven in the seventh inning, and later, put the Mets in front 9-8 with a two-run bomb in the ninth inning that got Mets fans in attendance jumping out of their seats. As Canha saw the ball land in the seats in the left-center field, he extended his hands outward as if to thank divine intervention for the assist.
Canha finished the day with three hits, two homers, and five RBI.
Offensively, the Mets pounded out 16 hits against the Phillies. Daniel Voglebach had two hits, including an RBI double; Starling Marte and Jeff McNeil also had three hits games for New York on Sunday. Brandon Nimmo's ninth-inning home run proved to be the game-winner, as it put the Amazin's up 10-8.
Not to be lost in the victory was the stellar effort of rookie Nate Fisher, who came in relief of another rookie, Jose Butto. Butto gave up seven runs in just four innings of work. Fisher settled things down for the Mets, tossed three scoreless innings, and gave New York a chance to come back.
The Mets take on the Yankees on Monday night.
