Mets Keep Rolling, Blast Reds 5-1
The good vibes just keep coming for the New York Mets. After taking four of five from Atlanta over the weekend, the Mets took care of the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 at Citi Field behind eight stellar innings by starter Chris Bassitt.
Bassitt gave up only an unearned run during his outing, while striking out eight batters. It marked the second time this year that Bassitt went eight innings, a feat he accomplished on June 14 in a win against Milwaukee.
Once again the Mets backed up their starting pitcher with runs early and often. A two-run blast by Starling Marte gave New York a 2-0 lead. Then the newest members of the Mets, Daniel Voglebach and Tyler Naquin continued their stellar efforts at the dish. Voglebach had two more hits, including a double and a RBI single that helped to lift the Amazin’s to a 3-0 lead. Naquin added a two-run triple (his second in as many weeks) to push the Mets a 5-1 lead.
The Mets now stand at 32-games over .500 at 71-39.
With Edwin Díaz unavailable, Adam Ottavino would have been in line for his first save of the season, but Tyler Naquin takes that out of his hands with a two-run triple. It's no longer a save situation.
