The New York Jets received quiet the scare this morning when right tackle Mekhi Becton limped off the field after just the second play of a scrimmage, grimacing and holding onto his surgically repaired right knee.
However according to Head Coach Robert Saleh, the knee is stable, and the severity doesn't seem "like a big deal." Becton will still be evaluated.
This is a big season for the big man, who missed all of last season with a knee injury. The Jets drafted Becton first overall in the 2020 NFL draft hoping that he would be a stalwart at the left tackle position, but that has not happened. The Jets loved the way George Fant played last season at left tackle and have moved Becton over to right tackle. While it may seem like a demotion, the Jets reasoned earlier in camp that it was best to have Becton and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker together on the right side of the line, while veterans Fan and Lakin Tomlinson protect Zach Wilson's blind side.
Since camp began two weeks ago, Becton has been in great football shape, and according to beat reporter Rich Cimini, has really impressed his coaches and teammates with his renewed dedication.
